What is a buff and why choose one over a scarf?
A buff is a closed knitted tube worn around the neck. Unlike a scarf, it cannot unwind, drag or get caught — which is why it works so well for children — and it sits closer to the skin, sealing the collar against wind with less fabric.
Does a merino buff itch on the neck?
No — the neck is exactly where coarse wool bothers people most, and extra-fine merino is chosen for that reason: its fibres are too fine to prickle. A Jakopina merino buff is comfortable directly on the skin, for children and adults alike.
When is a buff warm enough, and when do I need more?
Merino regulates temperature, so a buff alone covers everyday cold — the walk to school, the playground, errands. In serious cold it layers under a jacket collar and pairs with a hat; because it is thin, it fits where a scarf will not.
How do I wash a knitted buff?
On a wool cycle at up to 30 °C with a mild wool detergent, then dry flat. Like all merino, a buff rarely needs washing — airing it overnight is usually enough, even with daily wear.
